Palladia-Mors

Palladia-Mors was introduced in 1995 as part of the Chronicles expansion set for Magic: The Gathering. This set was unique in the game's early history, as it functioned as a reprint set, designed to make older, rare cards from the Limited Edition Alpha, Beta, and Unlimited sets more accessible to the growing player base. As one of the five Elder Dragons originally featured in the Legends expansion, Palladia-Mors served as a high-mana cost legendary creature that defined the power-level aesthetic of the game's formative years.

The card's striking illustration was created by Melissa Benson, whose work became a cornerstone of early Magic: The Gathering's fantasy identity. Her depiction of the dragon emphasized an earthy, grounded brutality consistent with the creature's green-red-white color identity. Upon its re-release in Chronicles, the card was received with mixed sentiment; while players appreciated the increased availability of the Elder Dragon cycle, the set itself faced criticism from the collector community for diluting the secondary market value of original cards, a controversy that eventually influenced Wizards of the Coast's long-term reprint policy.
