Where it came from
Panther Warriors was released in 1997 as part of the Visions expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed to capture a distinct aesthetic inspired by Japanese art and folklore, moving away from the European high-fantasy themes that dominated earlier releases. Mechanically, the card reflects the set's focus on creature-heavy strategies and the introduction of the flanking keyword, which rewards aggressive combat interactions.
The artwork for this card was created by illustrator Val Mayerik. Known for his diverse portfolio in comics and fantasy illustration, Mayerik leaned into the set's thematic direction to depict the card's feline combatants. The design emphasizes the swift, predatory nature of the creatures, aligning with the green color identity of the game, which historically prioritizes natural power and creature efficiency.
