Where it came from
Crypt Rats was released in 1997 as part of the Visions expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was notable for introducing mechanics that emphasized synergy and graveyard utility, solidifying the game's shift toward more complex board interactions. The card itself was created to serve as a recurring damage source for black-aligned decks, effectively turning the player's life total into a resource for board control.
The evocative artwork was illustrated by Kev Walker, a prominent figure in the game's visual history known for his gritty, high-contrast style. Walker sought to capture the swarming, repulsive nature of the creatures, utilizing shadows and hunched silhouettes to emphasize their pestilent theme. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its efficiency in Limited formats, and it remains a staple of black-based control strategies in various legacy formats due to its unique ability to wipe the board.
