Provenance

Where it came from

Lichenthrope was released in 1997 as part of the Visions expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to explore themes of darkness and decay while introducing new mechanics that built upon the foundation of the Mirage block. This card, specifically, reflects the set's thematic preoccupation with organic horror and the melding of nature with supernatural malevolence.

The artwork for Lichenthrope was illustrated by artist Susan Van Camp. Known for her distinctive style during the game's early years, Van Camp aimed to capture the unsettling transformation of a forest creature into a lichen-covered monstrosity. At the time of its release, the card was received as a functional addition to the green color identity, valued by players for its flavor-rich depiction of a swampy, encroaching wilderness.
