Provenance

Where it came from

Paralyze debuted as part of the Base Set for the Pokémon Trading Card Game, which was first released in Japan in 1996 before arriving in English markets in 1999. Created by Wizards of the Coast under license from Nintendo and Game Freak, the game was designed to distill the strategic elemental combat of the original Game Boy titles into a tabletop format. The Unlimited Edition reflects the mass-market reprint of the original base set, produced after the initial limited 'First Edition' run to meet surging global demand.

The card illustration was provided by Keiji Kinebuchi, a long-time contributor to the early Pokémon TCG library. Kinebuchi’s work is characterized by a distinctive, slightly experimental aesthetic that often featured mixed media or digital rendering styles typical of the late 1990s. As a Trainer card, Paralyze—which allows a player to flip a coin to incapacitate an opponent's Pokémon—was designed as a foundational mechanic to teach players about status conditions, serving as a tactical staple in the earliest competitive meta.
