Where it came from
Path of the Animist was released in 2023 as part of the March of the Machine Commander set. The card was designed for the Growing Threat deck, which focuses on the Phyrexian mechanic 'incubate,' a recurring theme throughout the broader March of the Machine expansion that depicts the multiversal war against the invading Phyrexian forces.
The card features artwork by veteran fantasy illustrator Alayna Danner. Her style, often characterized by ethereal lighting and lush natural environments, was utilized here to capture the essence of the Animist—a figure bridging the gap between nature and the artificial corruption spreading across the plane. Upon its release, players noted the card for its efficiency as a ramp spell, particularly in green-based commander decks that benefit from its ability to search for basic lands.
