Where it came from
Cutthroat Negotiator was released in 2023 as part of the Commander set for March of the Machine. The card was designed for the 'Growing Threat' preconstructed deck, which focuses on the Phyrexians and the use of Incubator tokens. The card’s mechanics reflect the manipulative and parasitic nature of the Phyrexian faction, rewarding players for forcing opponents into disadvantageous trades while simultaneously advancing their own board state.
The artwork was created by illustrator Fajareka Setiawan, who has contributed extensively to the Magic: The Gathering visual identity. Setiawan opted for a visceral, high-contrast aesthetic that captures the unsettling, biomechanical horror characteristic of the Phyrexians during the March of the Machine storyline. Upon its release, the card was received as a solid utility piece for black-white Commander decks, valued primarily for its board presence and the strategic depth it adds to combat-focused multiplayer games.
