Where it came from
Path to Exile was originally printed in the 2009 expansion Conflux, quickly establishing itself as a cornerstone of competitive Magic: The Gathering. This specific version was released as a DCI promotional card, distributed to players through organized play events to incentivize participation in local tournaments. The card reflects the game's shift toward high-efficiency removal spells in the white color identity, providing a balanced trade-off by exiling a creature while granting the opponent a basic land.
The artwork for this promotional printing was illustrated by Todd Lockwood, a veteran artist in the fantasy gaming space. Lockwood designed the piece to visually capture the essence of the spell—a figure being cast away into an ethereal void—utilizing his signature blend of dramatic lighting and fluid motion. Upon its release, the promotional card was well-received by the player base, prized for its unique aesthetic and the utility of the card within eternal formats like Modern.
