Path to Exile

Path to Exile was originally introduced in the 2009 Conflux set, designed as a powerful piece of spot removal for white decks. It was intended to offer a conditional efficiency that required a strategic trade-off, forcing the opponent to search their library for a basic land in exchange for the permanent removal of one of their creatures. This specific printing appears in the 2022 Starter Commander Decks, a product line curated by Wizards of the Coast to provide accessible, ready-to-play entry points for new players entering the Commander format.

The card’s enduring visual identity stems from its original illustration by Todd Lockwood, who rendered a dramatic scene of a knight being banished through a ethereal portal. Lockwood’s work is highly regarded in the fantasy genre for its sense of scale and movement, perfectly capturing the theme of exile. The design has remained a staple in Magic: The Gathering for over a decade because it strikes a delicate balance between player interaction and format health, remaining a standard inclusion in white-aligned decks across multiple formats.
