Penance

Penance was released in 1998 as part of the Exodus expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, published by Wizards of the Coast. Developed as the final set in the Rath Cycle, Exodus was designed to introduce high-risk, high-reward mechanics that reflected the desperate narrative of the world of Rath as it faced the encroaching forces of the Phyrexians. The set aimed to provide players with powerful utility cards that could turn the tide of a game, fitting into the dark, apocalyptic aesthetic that defined the block.

The card’s striking illustration was crafted by artist Kev Walker, whose work became a cornerstone of the game's visual identity during the late 1990s. Walker utilized a stark, visceral style to convey the concept of the card—a form of ritualized sacrifice or self-inflicted damage to prevent further harm. Upon its release, the card was received as a niche but flavorful enchantment, noted by players for its unconventional mana cost-saving mechanic and its thematic alignment with the black mana color identity.
