Where it came from
People of the Woods was released in 1994 as part of The Dark, the fourth expansion set for the Magic: The Gathering collectible card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to evoke a darker, more folkloric atmosphere compared to the high-fantasy themes of the core game, drawing heavy inspiration from European mythology and tales of suburban horror.
The card features artwork by Susan Van Camp, a prolific contributor to early Magic sets who was known for her distinct, illustrative style. The art captures the set’s thematic commitment to woodland mysticism, depicting the namesake creatures with a grounded, earthy aesthetic that helped define the visual identity of the expansion. While the card is often remembered by longtime players for its specific functional role in green-aligned decks of the era, it remains a quintessential piece of the mid-nineties expansion wave that solidified the game's early collectible appeal.
