Where it came from
Wormwood Treefolk was released in 1994 as part of The Dark, the fifth expansion set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was conceptually distinct for its gothic horror themes and darker, more muted color palette, designed to differentiate itself from the high-fantasy aesthetic of the core game. The cards from this period were produced by Wizards of the Coast during the game's initial surge in popularity, reflecting an era where mechanical complexity was still evolving alongside the game's burgeoning lore.
The card features artwork by Susan Van Camp, who was a significant contributor during Magic’s early years. Van Camp’s illustration focuses on the grim, twisted nature of the treefolk, aligning with the dark, folklore-inspired tone requested for the set. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional, if niche, addition to green decks, notable primarily for its thematic consistency with the set's unsettling environmental imagery.
