Perilous Predicament

Perilous Predicament was released in 2017 as part of the Aether Revolt expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set in the steampunk-inspired plane of Kaladesh, the card reflects the themes of political instability and revolution that defined the set's narrative arc. It was designed as a black sorcery spell that forces opponents to sacrifice both a creature and a planeswalker, mechanically representing the difficult choices faced by characters caught in the conflict between the ruling Consulate and the rising resistance.

The card’s illustration was provided by artist Nils Hamm, whose work often utilizes atmospheric, painterly techniques to evoke mood and tension. Hamm sought to capture the high-stakes danger inherent in the Kaladeshi struggle, using a dark and dramatic color palette to contrast with the usually bright, optimistic aesthetic of the plane.
