Where it came from
Perilous Vault was originally released in the 2014 Magic: The Gathering set Magic 2015. It was designed as a high-mana-cost board wipe that offers a controlled, albeit delayed, answer to nearly any permanent on the battlefield. The card represents a desperate, final-resort measure in gameplay, reflecting its thematic flavor of an explosive mechanism meant to clear everything in its vicinity regardless of the cost.
The Retro Artifact version, released in 2022 as part of The Brothers' War expansion, serves as a thematic homage to the game's deep history. Featuring the classic card frame aesthetic, this reprint was intended to evoke nostalgia for players who experienced the early days of Magic. While the mechanical function remains identical to the original print, the updated border art highlights the timeless, rugged aesthetic associated with the artifact-heavy lore of the Urza and Mishra conflict.
