Whenever a permanent becomes untapped, that permanent's controller mills a card.

Where it came from
Mesmeric Orb was originally released in the 2001 set Invasion, designed as an artifact that forces players to mill cards from their library into their graveyard. The card emerged during a period in Magic: The Gathering history where Wizards of the Coast was experimenting with deck-depletion mechanics as a viable alternate win condition, placing the card squarely within the control-oriented archetypes of the era. Its design is intended to create a psychological state of inevitability, slowly eroding an opponent's resources turn by turn.
The version from The Brothers' War Retro Artifacts set features a specialized frame treatment that honors the aesthetic of early Magic cards. The illustration, originally crafted by artist Donato Giancola, depicts the object as a swirling, ethereal sphere, capturing a sense of dizzying entrapment. This reprint was received positively by the community for both its strategic utility in Commander formats and the nostalgic appeal of its vintage-inspired visual layout.
