Provenance

Where it came from

Perish the Thought was released in 2010 as part of the Rise of the Eldrazi expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on the emergence of the Eldrazi, ancient and incomprehensible cosmic entities, and this card was designed to represent the psychological toll of encountering such overwhelming alien power through the mechanic of hand disruption.

The card was illustrated by Howard Lyon, who utilized a haunting, atmospheric style to capture the feeling of mental unraveling. Within the game's competitive landscape, the card was viewed as a niche control tool, valued more for its thematic resonance with the Eldrazi storyline than for widespread tournament dominance.
