Where it came from
Perplexing Test was released in 2023 as part of the Wilds of Eldraine Commander set, a collection themed around high-fantasy, fairy-tale motifs consistent with the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. Designed to function as a strategic board wipe in multiplayer formats, the card reflects the mechanics of choice and deception often associated with blue-aligned control decks.
The artwork, illustrated by Justine Mara Andersen, utilizes a stylistic approach that emphasizes the whimsical yet dangerous nature of the Eldraine plane. It was designed to provide players with a situational tool for resetting the battlefield, and upon its release, it was received by the community as a niche but effective utility card for Commander play.
