Where it came from
The Personal Decoy card originated as part of the Mystery Booster playtest set, released by Wizards of the Coast in 2019. These cards were designed to be drafted in a unique, chaotic environment, featuring experimental mechanics and internal-only designs that were never intended for standard tournament legality. The set served as a tribute to the long history of card development, with many designs intentionally breaking traditional rules to explore new spaces.
The aesthetic of the Mystery Booster playtest cards is intentionally utilitarian and sparse, featuring a gray playtest frame that highlights the card's function over its presentation. Designers opted for this minimalist look to signify the card’s status as a 'work in progress,' focusing on the interaction between the card's effect and the game state rather than polished art or flavor text.
