Where it came from
Zyym, Mesmeric Lord was released as part of the 2019 Mystery Booster Playtest Cards, a unique set distributed during conventions. These cards were designed to mimic the aesthetic of early Magic: The Gathering playtest material, featuring unconventional designs that push the boundaries of standard gameplay mechanics. They were never intended for tournament legality but were created to offer players a glimpse into the experimental and often humorous iterative process behind game design.
The card features an illustration and ability set that leans into the 'silver-bordered' design philosophy, focusing on interactivity and subverting typical card game rules. The design team employed a stark, minimalist visual style reminiscent of internal development documents. The card was received by the community as a prized collector's curiosity, serving as a rare artifact that highlights the playful, creative spirit of the Wizards of the Coast development team during their live events.
