Where it came from
Petting Zookeeper was released in 2022 as part of the Unfinity set, the fourth expansion in Wizards of the Coast’s 'Un-' series. These sets are intentionally designed to exist outside of standard tournament legality, focusing on humor, unconventional mechanics, and high-concept artistic themes that explore the boundaries of the Magic: The Gathering ruleset.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Titus Lunter, who leaned into the retro-futurist 'space carnival' aesthetic that defines the Unfinity art direction. By depicting a scene that plays with the literal interpretation of the creature's abilities, Lunter and the design team aimed to balance the set's whimsical tone with a functional, albeit intentionally silly, gameplay experience that has been noted by players for its lighthearted contribution to the game's broader lore.
