Where it came from
Petting Zookeeper was released in 2022 as part of Unfinity, the fourth installment in Wizards of the Coast's Un-series of Magic: The Gathering card sets. Unlike standard tournament-legal sets, this collection was designed with a sci-fi carnival theme, intentionally blending traditional game mechanics with humorous, rule-breaking 'acorn' cards. The card itself utilizes the set's unique aesthetic, which leans heavily into retro-futuristic space tropes and whimsical creature designs.
The illustration for Petting Zookeeper was created by artist Bryan Sola. The visual design focuses on the playful, chaotic energy of an extraterrestrial wildlife park, aiming to capture the lighthearted spirit of the Un-series. Upon its release, the card was received as a flavorful addition to the set, celebrated for its ability to interact with the game's creature-heavy landscape through a distinct, comedic lens that emphasizes player interaction over rigid competitive play.
