Phalanx Formation

Phalanx Formation was released in 2014 as part of Journey into Nyx, the final set in the Theros block for Magic: The Gathering. The card draws heavily from the set’s central theme of Greek mythology, specifically focusing on the heroic deeds and combat tactics of the inhabitants of the plane of Theros. As an instant-speed spell, it reflects the coordination and disciplined shield work associated with classical hoplite warfare, fitting perfectly into the mechanics of the white color identity which emphasizes unity and creature resilience.

The artwork was commissioned by Dan Murayama Scott, who captured the stoic determination of a group of soldiers locking their shields together. Scott’s work on this piece was designed to evoke a sense of structural solidarity and tactical superiority, utilizing bold lighting to highlight the metallic sheen of the armor and the uniformity of the formation. Upon its release, it was regarded by the player base as a versatile limited-play tool, valued for its ability to shift the momentum of a combat phase through its double-strike and toughness-boosting effects.
