Where it came from
Phalanx Formation was released in 2014 as part of Journey into Nyx, the final expansion of the Theros block in the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was designed to explore the intersection of Greek mythology and the game’s unique enchantment-focused mechanics. The card was created to provide a strategic combat trick for white decks, emphasizing the set's focus on collective strength and the heroic deeds characteristic of the Theros theme.
The artwork for the card was illustrated by David Palumbo, who aimed to depict a disciplined, phalanx-style shield wall consistent with the block's mythological aesthetic. By granting double strike to multiple creatures, the card reflects the coordinated military discipline of a traditional phalanx, and it was received by players as a specialized tool for aggressive decks looking to swing a game's momentum during the combat phase.
