Where it came from
Phantom Warrior was released in 1997 as part of the Weatherlight expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the final set in the Mirage block, Weatherlight was instrumental in developing the game's ongoing narrative arc, focusing on the crew of the skyship Weatherlight. The card reflects the set's emphasis on creature-based combat and the introduction of mechanics that allowed for specific types of evasion, fitting into the blue color identity's penchant for unblockable threats.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Christopher Rush, a legendary figure in the early Magic: The Gathering community known for iconic works like Black Lotus. Rush’s design for the Phantom Warrior aimed to depict a spectral, ethereal combatant, utilizing a cool color palette that emphasized its ghost-like nature. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its efficiency in Limited formats, where its ability to bypass standard blockers made it a reliable win condition.
