Master of Arms

Master of Arms was released in 1997 as part of the Weatherlight expansion, the final set in the Mirage block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this expansion concluded the multi-year Weatherlight Saga, a pivotal narrative arc that introduced a core crew of characters who would define the game's lore for years to come. The card reflects the set's emphasis on intricate combat mechanics and the tactical complexity that defined the mid-90s era of the game.

The artwork for the card was created by artist Christopher Rush, one of the most iconic illustrators in the game's early history, known for his work on legendary cards like Black Lotus. Rush’s design for the Master of Arms emphasizes the disciplined, defensive nature of the character, utilizing the stark, high-contrast aesthetic that characterized the visual language of the period. The card was well-received by players of the time for its ability to manipulate combat states, serving as a staple in various control-oriented decks that prioritized board state management.
