Where it came from
Phylactery Lich was introduced to the Magic: The Gathering card game in the 2010 Magic 2011 core set and later reprinted in the 2019 Core Set under collector number 113. Designed as a high-reward creature, the card draws heavily on the Dungeons and Dragons trope of the lich hiding its soul within a mystical vessel, requiring players to bond the creature to a specific artifact on the battlefield. Its design mechanic forces a strategic interplay between artifact permanents and creature durability, reflecting the lich's inherent dependence on its phylactery for survival.
The illustration for the Core Set 2019 printing was rendered by artist Nils Hamm, whose work is characterized by a dark, atmospheric, and often ethereal aesthetic. Hamm’s depiction emphasizes the menacing, skeletal nature of the lich while highlighting the glowing, ominous artifact at its center. The design was received by the player community as a flavorful, albeit challenging-to-use, card that serves as a staple of black-aligned artifact-themed decks, celebrated for its durability when successfully paired with an indestructible artifact.
