Where it came from
Phylactery Lich was introduced in the Magic 2013 core set, released in July 2012. As a card that requires an artifact to survive on the battlefield, it reflects the core set's emphasis on simplified yet strategic mechanics, designed to provide a durable mid-game threat for black-aligned control decks that utilize low-cost artifact permanents.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Svetlin Velinov. He crafted the lich with an imposing, skeletal presence surrounded by dark, necrotic energy, aiming to visually represent the card's defensive resilience. Upon release, the card was received as a flavorful addition to the set, frequently appearing in casual playgroups and specialized tribal decks despite seeing limited representation in highly competitive tournament formats.
