Phyrexian Beast

The Phyrexian Beast token was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate set. While the set focuses heavily on Dungeons & Dragons themes, this token serves as a cross-promotional element representing the aesthetic of the Phyrexian faction from the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. It was created to provide a physical representation for game effects that generate 3/3 Phyrexian Beast creature tokens, specifically those triggered by cards like Vraan, Executioner Thane or similar mechanics that lean into Phyrexian creature types.

The art direction for this token follows the established visual language of the New Phyrexia plane, emphasizing grotesque, biomechanical forms and an unsettling, alien anatomy. Illustrators working on these supplemental tokens are tasked with maintaining a cohesive look that signals the card's affiliation even in the absence of a traditional card frame or text box. Like many tokens issued in modern Magic expansions, this item was designed for utility during play rather than as a primary collectible, though it remains a sought-after piece for players building thematic Phyrexian decks.
