Phyrexian Boon

Phyrexian Boon was released in the 1996 Alliances expansion for Magic: The Gathering, a set renowned for its high power level and the introduction of the pitch card mechanic. The card was designed as a black enchantment that allowed players to sacrifice a creature to provide a power and toughness boost to another, fitting the set's thematic focus on the sinister and sacrificial nature of the Phyrexians.

The artwork for this card was created by artist Anson Maddocks, who was a frequent contributor to the game's early aesthetic. His illustrative style often utilized dark, visceral imagery, which served to emphasize the Phyrexian faction's role as mechanical, bio-engineered nightmares. At the time of its release, the card was received as a niche utility piece for aggressive decks, contributing to the broader lore of the Phyrexian invasion that would define the game's narrative for years to come.
