Phyrexian Soulgorger

Phyrexian Soulgorger was released in 2006 as part of the Coldsnap expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set was unique for its design goal of completing the Ice Age block, which had originally concluded over a decade prior. The card reflects the dark, biomechanical aesthetic of the Phyrexians, a recurring antagonist faction in the game’s multiverse that focuses on the fusion of flesh and machinery.

The card was illustrated by Greg Staples, whose work often captures the grim and visceral nature of the Phyrexian aesthetic. Mechanically, the card was designed as a high-risk, high-reward creature, requiring the player to sacrifice their life total over time to maintain its presence on the battlefield. It is remembered by players for its punishing upkeep cost and its role as a representative of the extreme, parasitic trade-offs often found in black-aligned cards during that era.
