Provenance

Where it came from

The Phyrexian Splicer was originally released in the 1997 Tempest expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set on the plane of Rath, the card reflects the aesthetic of the Phyrexians—an ancient, biomechanical civilization obsessed with artificial evolution and the integration of machine components into living organisms. The card mechanics, which allow for the removal of flying or shadow abilities from creatures, serve as a narrative representation of these forced, crude biological alterations.

The illustration was created by artist Heather Hudson, who provided much of the visual shorthand for the Phyrexian influence during the Tempest block. Her work on the Splicer emphasizes the visceral, grafting nature of the faction's technology, utilizing metallic textures and distorted anatomy to convey a sense of dread. Upon its release, the card was viewed as a niche tactical tool, celebrated by players for its specific utility in combating evasion-heavy strategies rather than for its raw power.
