Phyrexia's Core

Phyrexia's Core was originally introduced in the Scars of Mirrodin expansion, representing the heart of the metallic, biomechanical plane of Mirrodin as it succumbed to the influence of the Phyrexians. The card depicts a location central to the plane's transformation, serving as a symbolic and functional representation of the 'Great Work' where the plane's inhabitants were systematically converted into Phyrexian oil-infused entities. Its inclusion in the Duel Decks: Elves vs. Inventors set, released in 2018, served to provide a utility land for the artifact-focused 'Inventors' deck, emphasizing the synergy between mechanical sacrifice and resource management.

The artwork for the card was created by Aleksi Briclot, a prolific illustrator known for his work in the fantasy and science fiction genres. Briclot utilized a stark, industrial color palette and organic, nightmarish geometry to convey the sinister nature of the Core. Upon its original release, the design was well-received by players for its clever flavor-to-mechanic integration, allowing players to sacrifice artifacts for life, effectively mirroring the lore where Phyrexians discard the old to build the new.
