Provenance

Where it came from

Phyrexia's Core was first introduced in the Scars of Mirrodin expansion in 2010 before being reprinted as part of the Commander 2014 product line. The card was designed to mechanically represent the heart of the plane of New Phyrexia, a corrupted, metallic world where the Phyrexian faction exerts total control. Its ability allows players to sacrifice artifacts in exchange for life, reflecting the grim, utilitarian nature of the setting where machinery and biological matter are fused through traumatic transformation.

The art was illustrated by Daniel Ljunggren, who sought to capture the sterile and imposing aesthetic of the Phyrexian architecture. The design emphasizes towering spires and dark, industrial geometry, consistent with the visual language of the plane established by Wizards of the Coast. Upon its release, the card became a staple in Commander decks focused on artifact synergy, valued for its utility in triggering 'death' effects and mitigating the risk of giving opponents control over key artifacts.
