Where it came from
Pick Your Poison was introduced as part of the Mystical Archive, a specialized subset of cards featured in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering expansion, Strixhaven: School of Mages. This set was designed to celebrate the history of instant and sorcery spells throughout the game's evolution, featuring iconic and powerful cards reimagined with unique, academic-themed art styles meant to evoke the aesthetic of a magical university's library.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Caio Monteiro, who utilized a distinct stained-glass visual language common to the archive's aesthetic identity. By blending intricate linework with a bold, emblematic color palette, Monteiro aimed to capture the essence of a choice between lethal magical options. Upon release, the Mystical Archive cards were highly sought after by collectors for their striking departure from standard set art and their successful integration of a cohesive, high-fantasy design motif.
