Where it came from
Daze was originally released as a common card in the 2000 Nemesis expansion, quickly becoming a staple in competitive formats due to its unique ability to provide free countermagic. Its inclusion in the 2021 Strixhaven: School of Mages Mystical Archive set was part of a special subset of 63 iconic instants and sorceries from across Magic: The Gathering history, curated to celebrate the magical academy theme of the Strixhaven set.
The Mystical Archive version of Daze features distinct, localized art styles that draw heavily from global influences to reflect the diverse aesthetic of an ancient magical library. The design team sought to give these classic spells a premium, scholarly feel, utilizing a unique etched-foil treatment and ornate frame designs that distinguish them from standard card releases, which was met with widespread enthusiasm from the player community for both its utility and its artistic departure from traditional card frames.
