Pillarverge Pathway was released as part of the Zendikar Rising Art Series in 2020. This subset of the Zendikar Rising expansion was designed to showcase the intricate illustrations of Magic: The Gathering cards on larger, frame-less, premium-finish cardstock. These cards function primarily as collector's items and visual showcases for the artistic talent employed by Wizards of the Coast rather than for standard tournament play.

The artwork for this specific card was commissioned by artist Johannes Voss. Voss is widely recognized for a painterly, ethereal style that often emphasizes light and environment. In his design for the Pathway cycle, he sought to capture the shifting, unstable geography of the Zendikar plane, using color palettes to distinguish the two distinct land types represented on the card. The piece was well-received by the community for its evocative depiction of the plane's unique floating ruins.
