Pit Spawn

Pit Spawn was released in 1998 as part of the Exodus expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the third and final set in the Rath Cycle, Exodus was designed by Wizards of the Coast to conclude the block's narrative arc, which focused on the plane of Rath and the unfolding conflict between the Phyrexians and the Coalition. The set introduced mechanics like the 'buyback' ability and was notable for its dark, thematic resonance within the game's ongoing lore.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Jeff Miracola, who was commissioned to capture the visceral, grotesque aesthetic characteristic of the Phyrexian-aligned creatures in this era of the game. Miracola’s design focused on conveying a sense of menace through twisted anatomy and shadows, reflecting the horror-fantasy tone prevalent in the late-nineties Magic expansions.
