Provenance

Where it came from

Spike Cannibal was released in 1998 as part of the Exodus expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set served as the conclusion to the Rath Cycle, a narrative block focused on the artificial plane of Rath and the conflict between the Phyrexians and the Weatherlight crew. The card reflects the set's darker, biomechanical aesthetic, depicting a predatory creature native to the harsh landscape of the plane.

The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Joel Biske, whose style during this period often emphasized the visceral and otherworldly nature of the game's creatures. Biske aimed to capture the ruthless biological efficiency of the Spike species, which were portrayed as rapidly evolving predators capable of consuming their own kin to grow stronger. Upon release, the card was recognized for its unique ability to interact with other creatures of its type, becoming a niche but functional piece within the green color identity of the late nineties.
