Plague Rats

Plague Rats was originally released in the 1993 Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering, designed by Richard Garfield to introduce a recursive, scaling threat mechanic that grew stronger as more copies were played. As a staple creature of the Revised Edition, the card was reprinted to meet the surging demand for the game during its initial explosion in popularity. The mechanical intent was to force players to build decks around a swarm strategy, reflecting the card's theme of an encroaching, unstoppable pestilence.

The artwork was provided by Anson Maddocks, one of the most prolific early contributors to the game’s aesthetic. Maddocks utilized his signature gritty, organic style to capture the unsettling nature of the subject matter, focusing on a dense, murky composition that emphasized the grotesque mass of the rats. The illustration is widely regarded as a quintessential example of the game’s early dark fantasy visual identity, which favored a somber and tactile appearance over the highly polished digital art seen in later sets.
