Dark Ritual debuted in the Limited Edition Alpha set in 1993, anchoring the black color identity of Magic: The Gathering as an iconic mana acceleration spell. By the time it appeared in the 1994 Revised Edition, the card had already established itself as a staple of competitive play, embodying the high-risk, high-reward philosophy of the game's early design. As a common, it was ubiquitous, providing players with the ability to cast powerful, expensive spells far earlier than intended, which fundamentally shaped the development of early deck archetypes.

The artwork for the Revised Edition version was provided by Sandra Everingham, who contributed several pieces during Magic's formative years. Her interpretation of the card features a stark, ritualistic scene that leans into the darker, gothic aesthetic prevalent in the game's infancy. The design sought to visually represent the concept of sacrificing resources for immediate power, and the card's enduring presence in the Revised set—the first core set to see wide international distribution—solidified its status as a foundational element of the game's mechanics and visual history.
