Provenance

Where it came from

Plague Wind first appeared in the Urza's Destiny expansion in 1999, designed as a powerful high-cost sorcery meant to act as a one-sided board wipe. The card represents a classic top-down design, visually and mechanically capturing the flavor of a catastrophic magical event that leaves the caster’s forces untouched while eliminating all enemy creatures.

The Eighth Edition printing, which features the artwork by Greg Staples, marked the card's inclusion in the first modern-era core set. Staples’ illustration emphasizes the grim, sweeping nature of the spell, moving away from the more abstract depictions of earlier sets to offer a visceral look at the destruction, a design choice that was generally praised by players for its atmospheric impact.
