Provenance

Where it came from

Plague Wind was originally introduced in the Urza's Destiny expansion in 1999, designed as a high-mana sorcery that serves as a one-sided board wipe. By the time it was reprinted in the Ninth Edition core set in 2005, it had already established itself as a quintessential black-aligned control card, valued for its ability to eliminate all non-black creatures while leaving the caster's own forces untouched.

The Ninth Edition printing features artwork by Alan Pollack, who depicts the spell as a sweeping, ethereal force of destruction. Pollack’s illustration focuses on a haunting, spectral wave, aligning with the card's mechanical identity as an absolute reset button. The piece was well-received by players for its atmospheric quality, fitting the darker aesthetic of early Magic: The Gathering card design.
