Plague Wind

Plague Wind was originally introduced in the Urza's Destiny expansion in 1999, designed as a high-mana sorcery capable of clearing the board of all opposing creatures while leaving the caster's forces intact. Its inclusion in the Ninth Edition core set allowed it to reach a wider audience of players during the mid-2000s, serving as a signature board-wipe effect within the black color identity. The card is noted for its powerful, game-ending impact, balanced strictly by its prohibitive mana cost.

The Ninth Edition illustration was provided by Kev Walker, a prominent artist whose work defined the dark, gritty aesthetic of the game for many years. Walker’s depiction of the spell emphasizes a malevolent, sweeping force of destruction, consistent with the card's mechanical function. Upon its release, the card became a staple in casual formats and Commander, valued for its ability to swing the momentum of a game single-handedly, even if its efficiency remains debated in highly competitive formats.
