Lore

Why it matters

As a common card within this set, the Plagued Rusalka functions as a repeatable utility tool, allowing players to sacrifice their own creatures to weaken an opponent's board. This ability to trade smaller creatures for a tactical advantage makes it a staple for maintaining control during gameplay.

Provenance

Where it came from

Plagued Rusalka was originally released in the 2006 Magic: The Gathering expansion Guildpact, representing the Orzhov Syndicate, a guild characterized by its blend of religious hierarchy and organized crime. The card was designed to reflect the guild's mechanical focus on sacrificing creatures for tactical advantages, embodying the theme of a spectral being that demands tribute in the form of life force to punish opponents.

When the card was reprinted in the 2020 Jumpstart set as card number 268, it served as a functional piece within the 'Discard' themed deck. The original illustration by Greg Staples captures the grim, ethereal aesthetic typical of the Ravnica plane, emphasizing the character's role as a manifestation of the Orzhov's ruthless and parasitic power structure.
