Where it came from
Planar Cleansing was introduced in the Magic 2010 core set, released in July 2009. The card was designed as a powerful board wipe, serving as a replacement for previous iterations like Wrath of God in the core set environment. Its inclusion was part of a shift by Wizards of the Coast to move certain iconic effects into the white color pie, emphasizing a thematic 'cleansing' of the battlefield to reset the game state.
The artwork for the Magic 2010 edition was created by Aleksi Briclot. He aimed to depict a moment of total, ethereal destruction, moving away from the more literal interpretations of battlefield combat found in earlier cards. The design was well-received by players for its dramatic aesthetic and its mechanical utility, quickly becoming a staple in control decks for its ability to remove nonland permanents including planeswalkers and artifacts.
