Where it came from
Planar Cleansing first appeared in the Shards of Alara set in 2008, designed as a high-mana board wipe that enforces a complete reset of the battlefield. The card reflects the white mana color identity of restoring order by removing all non-land permanents, regardless of their type. This specific printing from Core Set 2020 served to reintroduce the card to the Standard rotation, providing players with a definitive answer to complex board states.
The artwork for this iteration was illustrated by Chase Stone. He focused on a depiction of cosmic purification, utilizing radiant light and ethereal energy to convey the total removal of permanents from the game field. The design was received by the community as a powerful, if expensive, utility card, valued primarily for its ability to clear planeswalkers and artifacts alongside creatures during pivotal moments in a match.
