Where it came from
Planar Engineering was released as a promotional card within the Secrets of Strixhaven subset, a thematic collection tied to the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Strixhaven: School of Mages, which debuted in 2021. The card was designed to function within the game's artifact-heavy mechanics, serving as a support piece that echoes the academic and arcane research themes prevalent in the Strixhaven University setting.
The card’s visual design focuses on the intricate, mystical architecture associated with the plane of Arcavios. Illustrators for the Strixhaven series were tasked with blending scholarly aesthetics with the high-fantasy elements of the Magic multiverse, resulting in a clean, intellectual look that differentiates the card from the more chaotic imagery often found in other sets. It was received by players as a functional utility card, valued primarily by collectors interested in completing the unique promotional frames released alongside the main set.
