Where it came from
Planar Engineering was released as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion, specifically within the supplemental Mystical Archive series. This collection was designed to highlight iconic spells from Magic: The Gathering's history, represented with specialized, lore-rich artwork that reflects the aesthetic traditions of the various colleges at Strixhaven University.
The card’s design focuses on the manipulation of space and magical theory, fitting the scholarly and experimental nature of the set’s curriculum. Illustrators for the Archive were tasked with creating visually distinct, ornate frames that evoke the feeling of ancient texts and magical manuscripts, a creative direction that was widely praised by players for its departure from standard card frame conventions.
