Where it came from
Planar Overlay was released in 2001 as part of the Planeshift expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to mechanically represent the narrative conflict of the Invasion block, where the plane of Rath was being physically superimposed over the plane of Dominaria. This thematic choice sought to illustrate the encroaching darkness and the destabilization of reality caused by the Phyrexians.
The artwork was illustrated by rk post, a prominent contributor to the game during this era known for his distinct, surrealist aesthetic. Post focused on visual distortion and the warping of space to match the card's function, which involves manipulating enchantments. Upon release, the card was viewed primarily as a niche utility tool, praised for its flavor integration but considered situational in most competitive formats.
