Where it came from
Planar Outburst was released in 2015 as part of the Battle for Zendikar set, a block centered on the return of the Eldrazi—catastrophic, extra-dimensional entities threatening the landscape of the plane of Zendikar. The promo version, marked by its unique collector number and foil treatment, was primarily distributed through Friday Night Magic events and Prerelease kits to encourage local community play during the set's launch season.
The card was illustrated by Cliff Childs, who aimed to capture the visceral scale of a landscape being violently reshaped by magical forces. Designed as a sorcery that functions as a board wipe, it reflects the mechanical theme of the 'Awaken' keyword, which allows players to turn their lands into elemental creatures. The card was well-received by players for its tactical flexibility, offering both defensive clearing power and the potential to build a board presence simultaneously.
