Where it came from
The Plasmancer was released in 2020 as part of the Necron Dynasties deck in the Warhammer 40,000 Commander set for Magic: The Gathering. This set marked a significant crossover collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and Games Workshop, integrating the grimdark science-fantasy lore of the Warhammer 40,000 universe into the mechanics of Magic. The card design highlights the Necrons, an ancient race of metallic, undead-like beings known for their command over reality-warping energy.
The artwork for this specific printing, featuring the holographic star treatment, reflects the aesthetic of the Necron Crypteks—specialized technomancers who manipulate lightning and quantum physics. The illustration captures the chilling, clinical nature of the faction, emphasizing their cold, mechanical art style. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its thematic synergy with graveyard-focused strategies and its accurate representation of the character's terrifying presence on the tabletop.
