Where it came from
Plaxmanta was originally released as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Dissension in 2006, within the Ravnica block. It represents the Simic Combine, a faction defined by their focus on biological experimentation and adaptation. The card was designed to embody the color pie philosophy of Blue and Green, utilizing a flash ability to surprise opponents during combat while protecting creatures from targeted spells.
The artwork for Plaxmanta was illustrated by Jim Murray, who leaned into the aquatic, shifting aesthetic of the Simic guild. By blending manta ray imagery with organic, semi-translucent textures, Murray captured the creature’s role as both a defensive ward and a mobile predator. Upon its release, it was noted for its utility in limited formats and its thematic resonance with the guild's focus on hybrid evolution.
